Unless you live in Cairns, you might think we have no cold weather at all. It's mid-July, and when I go for a walk, I still see people swimming at the beach. That doesn't mean for those of us who are locals, we don't feel the chillier months or that it doesn't affect our workout routines. Winter mornings make you want to stay in bed that extra hour, and for those of us who have a few aches and pains, the winter months can make getting up and doing a workout just that bit more painful. Adjusting your CrossFit routine can optimise your workouts. Here are essential tips to make the most of your training during these cooler months:

1. Dress for Success: Even in milder winter conditions, layering is key. Opt for moisture-wicking base layers to manage sweat and insulating mid-layers to retain warmth. Dressing warmly on your way to the gym and removing layers as you warm up will keep you comfortable.

2. Warm-Up Wisely: Combat the temptation to stay under the covers by prioritising a thorough warm-up. Incorporate dynamic movements like jumping jacks, high knees, and arm circles to increase circulation and loosen muscles. This prepares your body for the intensity of CrossFit exercises.

3.Adjust Intensity and Duration: Be mindful of your body's response to the cold. It may take longer to warm up fully, so consider adjusting the intensity and duration of your workouts accordingly. Shorter, more intense sessions can be just as effective as longer workouts during winter months.

4. Focus on Recovery: Cold weather can exacerbate muscle stiffness and joint pain. Incorporate mobility exercises, foam rolling, or yoga into your routine to improve flexibility and aid in recovery. Adequate hydration and nutrition are also crucial for maintaining peak performance. There is a temptation to skimp on water when the weather is cold. At this time of year, it is useful to keep tabs on how much water you're consuming and ensure you're getting enough before and after your workout.

5. Stay Motivated: Surround yourself with a supportive community to stay motivated through the winter months. If you have a regular workout buddy or buddies, don't let each other off the hook. This is the time of year to send that message the night before to make sure your gym BFF is going to be there shivering through the 5am class with you. Sharing a ride to the gym is a great way to make it more difficult for either of you to back out.

By implementing these strategies, you can adapt your CrossFit routine to thrive during mild winter weather. With preparation and dedication, the cooler months can be a rewarding time to progress towards your fitness goals and maintain overall well-being. Remember, this is the tropics and before we know it, we will be back in ninety nine percent humidity and praying for the cooler weather.
