Lack of time always comes in as the number 1 or 2 reason people don't get enough exercise. There is no doubt that modern life is busy; jobs, family, and study take up a lot of our time, but have you ever thought about why some people seem to fit so much into a day, while others of us find we are always struggling?

A deep dive into what you are prioritising may well reveal that you have plenty of time for work, family and CrossFit. Afterall, if we don't protect our health and preserve our longevity, everything else is going to suffer as a result.

There is no doubt that time is a finite resource we all get 24hrs a day. It is up to us what we prioritise in those 24hrs. And what we prioritise is a very personal choice. You need to decide what your non-negotiables are!

You may decide (and it would be a healthy decision to make) that sleeping 8 hours a night is a priority. You may also decide that spending time with your children after school from 3pm till 5pm uninterrupted is a priority, or time with your significant other is non-negotiable. Your priorities are entirely personal to you.

If you are having trouble with what you think should be a priority, try changing the words I don't have time and say, It is not a priority and see how well it sits with you. It's not a priority to scroll through the socials is okay for most of us, while It's not a priority to look after my health doesn't sit so well.

Once you have worked out your non-negotiables, it takes the hard work out of your decision making. If sleeping an 8-hour night is a non-negotiable (and you need to get up at 5am), watching something on television at 9pm simply isn't an option. You no longer have to even think about it!

SPEAK TO A COACH

Have you ever done an audit of your nutrition or your money? The same thing can be done with your time. Keep a VERY honest diary for a week. Don't change a thing. Just log every activity and the amount of time spent doing it. If you want to get fancy, you can even make it into a spread sheet on your computer, but, writing in a notebook will do just fine too.

After your week, colour code your activities  choose a colour for your non-negotiables, and a colour for your fixed activities  for many of us the blocks of time spent at work can't be changed.

Once you have done that, you will have a pretty accurate audit of where your time goes. How much time is spent on social media? How much on television or drinking alcohol?

Now, social media, television or having a drink are not necessarily bad ways to spend your time. The key is that you should be choosing to do these things mindfully. Perhaps every Wednesday you sit out on the back porch and have a glass of wine with your significant other. This may well be a non-negotiable for you, but is the extra hour after you finish the dishes, watching reruns of Game of Thrones really a priority?

Are there some activities that take forever when they should be quick and easy? Would getting ready in the morning be a lot quicker if you had planned outfits for each day? Could you save time on preparing lunch by buying from a business that specialises in pre-packed healthy meals?

Once you have audited your time, it becomes much easier to see where you can rearrange things and where you can save time. Where can you take out unimportant tasks and slot in something that is more valuable?

People often find that around the edges of activities is where time gets lost. You are meant to go to bed at nine, but you scroll social media for an extra half an hour or read your book for an extra hour. This lost time means you are eating into your 8 hours of sleep and the flow on effect is that you are too tired to work out in the morning and this is the time you have reserved for CrossFit.

A time audit may well reveal that you not only have time to get CrossFit as often as you would wish, but all the other things you enjoy as well!
